Homemade Lip Balm

One of the ways we are able to farm on one income is by making many things ourselves. We are excited to share those with you here!

Winter is coming. The air is colder and drier. We seem to go through a lot (and I mean a LOT) of lip balm this time of year. The last time I went to the store to buy some, I was surprised to see the price had gone up about $1! I decided I needed to make my own. I no longer have to worry about running out or remembering to get it when I make my monthly grocery shopping trip.

I found this wonderfully, simple recipe from Little House Living. I added peppermint essential oil, but you can add your favorite oil, or keep it plain. This recipe makes about 12 tubes and takes only about 10 minutes!

I’ve listed the cost of the ingredients and where I bought them at the bottom of the post. I am always looking to save money, so I’d love to hear if you have found any of these items at a better price.

Homemade Lip Balm

2 tablespoons of beeswax

2 tablespoons of coconut oil

2 tablespoons of shea butter

essential oil of your choice, about 10-12 drops (optional)

Preparation Instructions

Melt all the ingredients together in a pan on low heat. (I found a stainless steel pan at a local thrift store that I use for making all of my beauty/household products). Using a medicine dropper (you can find them in the pharmacy area of any grocery store), fill your tubes or container of choice. Let them sit to harden, then they are ready for use.

You might want to store them in a cool place (not a hot car) so they don’t melt. 🙂

Here is where I bought the items needed to make this. Since you use such a small amount per batch, each item should last you a while. If you are looking to make more of your own, you will use these things in numerous products, so they are great to have on hand.

Beeswax – Amazon
Shea Butter – Amazon
Coconut Oil – Costco is where I last got mine, but Azure Standard is another great place to find it.
White Lip Balm Tubes – Amazon

Amazon is such a great place to find so many of these items, especially if you have a Prime membership. Another place I love to order bulk from is Azure Standard. They are a co-op that has national delivery. You can go to their website www.azurestandard.com to find a delivery drop in your area.
